The Kolkata Regional Centre of Lalit Kala Akademi was established in the year 1983 & started functioning from 1984 at Keyatala, Kolkata.
Primarily the present campus belonged to the renowned Sculptor, Late Deviprasad Roy Chowdhury, who was eventually the first Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi. He received this studio space from the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for some commissions of large scale sculptures.
After the completion of his commissions, when Deviprasad left the space, artists of Kolkata – led by Late ParitoshSen and Amitava Banerjee – took initiative to preserve the working space and turn it into the Kolkata Regional Centre of Lalit Kala Akademi. Finally the Centre was inaugurated by Late Jyoti Basu, the then Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal.
