Lalit Kala Akademi has many functions to perfrom and one of its most important activities is the dissemination of knowledge relating to Indian Art in an attractive form. The purpose was to make the man in the street conscious of his cultural heritage. With this idea in mind, the Akademi had planned a series of illustrated monographs, the art journals and portfolios in as early as 1954, the year of Akademi's inception. The journal Lalit Kala Concentrates on the ancient Indian Art, publishing articles on new researches whereas Lalit Kala Contemporary deals with modern and contemporary art trends and artists: and Samkaleen Kala, a Hindi Journal that corresponds to the English one that deals with modern Indian art.

The Akademi publishes monographs on contemporary artists, multi colour reproductions of works of famous and well established Indian artists. Apart from these popular monographs there are series of portfolios on Indian miniature paintings and also on contemporary Indian paintings. The Akademi has also published some important books based on serious researches done by the established authors on Indian Art History.

The activity of the Akademi in these areas is strongly based on its responsibility to promote art and artists of the country without having any prejudice. As a National organisation, it caters to the tastes and sensibilities of the artists and art lovers all over the country.
