The work, Painted Myths of Creation: Art and Ritual of an Indian Tribe, was the first volume under the series titled, ‘Lok Kala Series’. The volume extensively deals with the ritual paintings of the Rathva and Bhilala tribes of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, respectively. Authored by the famed scholar on tribal culture, Dr Jyotindra Jain, this monograph analyses a seemingly unsophisticated tribal imagery against a complex ethnic and socio-cultural background. Through an analysis of their paintings, their procedures, mythological and ritual contexts, as well as musical inputs, the work provides a pertinent and new approach into tribal art research, an area facing the threat of extinction.
