Born in Delhi, the artist obtained the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Applied Art from the Delhi College of Art, Delhi. She has long standing experience in ceramic workshops under renowned ceramists such as Gerard Knapper, Duncan Shearer and has attended the Raku Workshop conducted by Delhi Blue Art Pottery. She has also learnt mural making under Mini Singh. She has held solo shows at National Ceramic Camps organised at Lucknow, Garhi and Delhi. She has participated in several group shows such as the All India show themed on Water, the Harmony Group Show , the All India Ceramic Exhibition, the People for Animals show, a two-man show at Gallery 25, the National Exhibition of Art, Bhopal, and the Ceramic Sculpture show held at the Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi. Gayatri Apte lives and works in Delhi.

Gayatri Apte:Getting the National Award is a very pleasant feeling. I had earlier never sent in my work as I am a ceramist and I felt that my fragile works may suffer damage in transit. This time, I had taken the risk, but I had packed the works with a lot of thought. After the call came about being selected for consideration for the National Award I had no option left but to send my work and this is the happy outcome .
